Why might it be wiser to upgrade electrical wiring before spending money on fancy lights and switches?

Featured in:

Beautiful lights and designer switches are tempting, but they’re only as reliable as the wiring behind them. Old, overloaded or poorly installed wiring can cause flickering, frequent fuse trips, or in worst cases, electrical hazards.

If you’re already opening walls or renovating, that’s the perfect time to check and, if needed, upgrade the wiring. It’s not glamorous money – nobody sees it – but it’s what keeps everything safe and functioning properly. Once the wiring is solid, you can layer any lights you want without worrying if the system can handle it.

Skipping this step and only changing visible fittings is like putting new tyres on a car with a damaged engine. It may look better, but the underlying risk remains.

Long term, good wiring also gives you flexibility for future additions – extra sockets, more lights, new appliances – without constantly overloading circuits.
