How can doing a walk-through with blue tape help you point out finishing issues at the end of the project?

Featured in:

When work is “almost finished,” it’s easy to miss small defects during a quick look. Your eyes jump around and everything blurs together: tiny paint splashes, uneven edges, chips on tiles, misaligned handles.

Using blue painter’s tape (or any low-tack tape) turns the final inspection into a systematic process. Walk through room by room and stick a small piece of tape next to every issue you spot: a scratch, a gap, a spot of missed paint, a loose fitting.

Soon, the contractor can clearly see what needs attention without relying on your memory or vague descriptions like “somewhere near the window.” It also helps avoid arguments later; everything you flagged is physically marked.

This simple tool makes finishing work much more focused. Instead of you repeatedly saying, “Oh, you missed this,” over several days, there’s one clear punch list on the walls for the team to work through.
