Why is it wise not to post live holiday updates online while you’re still away from home?

Featured in:

Posting “At the airport!”, “Day 3 in Goa!” or “Loving Europe!” in real time tells the world one thing very clearly: you’re not at home, and probably won’t be for a while. If your profile is public or visible to more people than you realise, that information can be misused.

Someone with bad intentions doesn’t need your full address; sometimes basic local knowledge, patterns, or visible landmarks from older posts are enough to identify where you live. Knowing you’re away lowers the perceived risk for them.

A safer approach is to enjoy your trip, take all the photos you like, and then share them once you’re back – or keep real-time sharing limited to a small, trusted group.

You still get to tell your story, just with a short delay that doesn’t broadcast your home’s emptiness to everyone.
