Why is it useful to ask about typical monthly maintenance or service charges before deciding on a flat?

Featured in:

Buying or renting a flat isn’t just about the main price or rent; it’s also about the ongoing monthly costs. Maintenance or service charges cover things like cleaning common areas, security, lifts, gardening, electricity for shared spaces, and sometimes water or garbage collection.

If you ignore this number, you might move in and then realise your monthly outgoings are much higher than you expected. A flat with a slightly lower rent but very high maintenance can end up costing the same as a more expensive-looking one with reasonable charges.

Asking for the typical monthly amount – and what it includes – helps you budget realistically. You can also compare buildings: one might charge more but include gym, pool and regular painting, while another is cheaper but does very basic upkeep.

Knowing the figure upfront prevents unpleasant surprises and helps you decide if the building’s services are worth what you’ll pay every month.
