What benefit is there in checking silicone or grout lines in showers for early signs of mould or cracking?

Featured in:

Silicone and grout are small details that do big jobs. Grout fills the gaps between tiles; silicone seals corners and edges where water might sneak in. In showers, these lines face constant moisture and temperature changes, so they’re under stress.

If you notice hairline cracks, missing bits, or black spots that don’t wash away, it’s a sign that water may be slipping behind the visible surfaces. Over time, this can cause hidden damp patches, loose tiles, or swollen walls and floors.

By checking these lines regularly and acting early – cleaning mould, redoing small sections of grout, or replacing tired silicone – you keep the waterproof barrier intact. It’s far cheaper and easier than tearing out a whole shower area because water has been quietly damaging the structure underneath for years.

Those thin lines might look insignificant, but they’re your first defence against bathroom leaks.
