How can watching how quickly sinks and showers drain help you detect early plumbing problems?

Featured in:

When everything is fine, water goes down smoothly: sink fills slightly, whoosh, gone. Shower water doesn’t pool around your feet. That’s your “normal.”

If you start noticing changes – water lingering longer, sinks forming a slow whirlpool instead of a clean drop, or shower water creeping up around your ankles – it’s a sign that something is partially blocking the pipes. Hair, grease, soap scum or foreign objects may be building up.

Catching this early lets you act gently: cleaning traps, using mild, appropriate drain cleaners, or calling a plumber before the blockage becomes complete. Waiting until water stops draining altogether means more mess, bad smells and often more expensive work.
