How can simply keeping gates and doors free of overgrown plants improve visibility and safety?

Featured in:

Creepers, tall shrubs and decorative plants around gates and doors can look charming, but if they grow too wild, they start to block sightlines. High or dense foliage can create hiding spots near entrances where someone can stand unseen, especially after dark.

By trimming plants back regularly so that you can clearly see the gate, pathway and front door from the street and from inside, you reduce these blind spots. Lights work better when they’re not hidden behind leaves, and neighbours or passers-by can see if something odd is happening.

You still get greenery, just in a controlled way that doesn’t compromise visibility. It’s a simple trade: a few minutes with pruning shears in return for a front area that looks neat and feels safer.
